Received his BSc degree on Electronics / Communication Engineering from Technical University of Istanbul and his MA degree on Interactive Media Design from Yıldız Technical University. Worked as design and test engineer on telecommunication systems Turkey (NETAŞ Northern Telecom - Istanbul), Germany (ALCATEL SEL- Stuttgart) and Belgium (ALCATEL BELL Lab. - Antwerp). After returning to Istanbul, started a multimedia design company of his own. Since 1999, teaching multimedia / visual communication design at Istanbul Bilgi University,Sabancı University, İstanbul Technical University, Yıldız Technical University. Exhibited his photography work at La Mama Gallery ("city and eye" - 1997) and at The Gallery Marmara-Manhattan ("alice in whirling land"- 2003) in New York. Exhibited his installations and cooperative performance works in several international venues. Ertan is co-organizer of TECHNE06 Istanbul International Digital Performans Platform. Ertan is the founder member of amber Beden-İşlemsel Sanatlar Derneği (Body-Process Arts Association), as a laboratory and research-and-production platform on new technologies in art. Ertan was the curator and director of the annual amberFestival since 2007 (www.amberfestival.org).

Company Background: ALCATEL Design and Development Unit

As a design engineer, I was responsible for the design and development of S/W modules of Trunk Device Handling (TDH) Subsystem for 24 channel PCM and Service Circuit Device Handling (SVCDH) Subsystem of SYSTEM-900 (GMH2000) exchanges.

My duties were:
Modification and implementation of 24 channel PCM Trunk Device Handler module (used in an Asia project previously) to GMH2000.
GMH2000 feature implementations on TDH module.
Writing PCM Alarm Handling code for 24 channel TDH in assembly language.
Implementation of Service Circuit Device Handler (FMM, SSM and ASM parts which were used in different projects previously) to GMH200 (specifically USA project).
Design and coding of R1 sending and receiving for USA project on GMH2000.
Implementation of R2 sending and receiving for Mexico, Tataristan and Netherlands.
Designing and coding RSIG (Service Circuit SSM) R2 registering in a data driven way so that it can be used for any country via different relational data tables. First application was Indonesian R2.
Design and coding of DTMF sending for Roomer-Port feature of USA project on GMH2000 and many other features in TDH and SVCDH.

NETAS, Istanbul, Turkey
September 1988 - January 1992

Company Background: A joint venture of Northern Telecom of Canada, manufacturing DMS-100, PBXs and telephone sets.

Research and Development Department, Domestic Design Section

As a design engineer I was responsible for Trunk Device Handler (32 ch) and Trunk Signalling Modules.

My duties were:
Development of Trunk Device Handler and Signalling Control Units, which have been partly designed for NETAS's small rural exchanges.
Overall design and development of Trunk Device Handler and Signalling Control modules, PCM Alarm Control Interface including firmware, R1 and R2 trunk signalling and maintenance on ELIF exchanges (a rural exchange up to 10.000 subscribers which has been designed and developed by NETAS).
I took part in a team of five engineers for top-level design (including a new operating system) of a new S/W for ELIF exchanges. I designed and partly coded modules for port scanning and network switching. I also designed and coded Trunk Device Handler and Trunk Signalling Modules with all aspects.
